AMG's Speech
  Jun

Hi Folks

Going into the IAFG competition this year as the defending champion is always a nice feeling. The Firm created history of all sorts in 2007 – to recap – we won 36 overall points (the closest E & Y is 29 points), won ten games along the way, kept the trophy permanently for table-tennis (champions three times) and if we win caroms, basketball and football (for the third time) this year, we will keep the trophy in our office as well – something to really look forward and to celebrate in anticipation.

What are my expectations for the IAFG, you may ask? The simple answer is: We will enjoy ourselves again and retain our championship trophy for the Second time.
I look forward for the great support from all our Deloitte colleagues at all the games and let us maintain the “great roar” that we are famous for. No doubt, our rivals will be gunning for us but we should never fear as we are the defending champions and we have a great team in us. I am so proud of our teams and supporters last year and I am confident that they will do the Firm proud again this year.

The Sports Club will have a “kick off” dinner this Friday at Modesto. I will be there to watch and “feel” the air (of enthusiasm) and I am expecting a big turnout- be there folks to hear whats the latest on the IAFG. Many of our sports personalities will be there to grace the occasion.

All the best, Folks. See you there at the Games.

Regards,

Mustapha Ghazali

Shahrul's call

“This year’s IAFG is particularly important for the football team because we get to keep the trophy if we win the championship for the third time. It will be our third championship in a row. Our players have trained hard for months anxiously waiting for this moment.

Our first match is with Shamsir Jasani Grant Thornton (SJGT) this Wednesday. Personally, I have been waiting for this match for more than 3 years now. It was a bitter memory for me when we lost to SJGT in the semifinals of the IAFG 2005 through penalty kicks. The Deloitte football team wants to redeem themselves. It is our chance to put this bad chapter behind us for good. The only way we know how to do this is by beating them convincingly. We want closure.

The format of this year’s competition is a little different from previous year’s IAFG. This year we will be playing a round-robin format where we get to play with all the participating teams. This means we get to play with all the other big 3’s. The team is looking forward to this with anticipation.  To be the best, you have to beat the rest!!

I personally believe that one of the most important parts to the formula in winning the championship is the supporters. Without them cheering us on, I do not believe we could have won it in the last 2 IAFGs. The players have all put in their personal time to train their hearts out for the past few months. Some of them have endured serious injury, bruised all over and some even needed medical treatment and therapy. All we hope for is a little time from the supporters by going to the field to cheer us on. We are ALL doing this for Deloitte, not just for you or for me but for ALL of us. Please do come and support us”.

Match Report - Deloitte vs SJGT
  Jul
3

The Deloitte Warriors have redeemed themselves from the defeat in IAFG 2005 by beating SJGT convincingly with a scoreline of 6 – 0 in their opening match. This is despite the coach resting some of the main players early in the second half. The match started off a little sluggish probably due to the delay of the match for more than half hour. The warriors took sometime to settle down before finding their rhythm in the second half where four goals were scored. Awie and Puvan each slotted in 2 and 3 goals respectively while Napis took the final goal. Awie opened the scoring spree with a flying header in the first half. The scoreline would have been bigger if the warriors took their chances well. Substitute Gary Huang replacing Jeff Kamaruddin in the second half also had his share of near misses. Our coach is satisfied with their overall performances.
Shahrul (with his hands held high), “Saya sudah dapat balas dendam. Sekarang boleh tidur lena sikit”.
Puvan (Hatrick), “I feel good with my performance today. Can’t wait for the next game.”
Jeff K, “ Saya nak makan, cepat la”

Carroms

How is the Carroms’ team preparations for this year’s IAFG?

Our training methods have never changed for the past 3 years. We train every single day except for weekends. We have never stopped training.

The Carroms’ team has won the title in the last two IAFGs in succession i.e. IAFG 2006 & IAFG 2007. What are our chances in making it 3 times in a row?

There is no reason why we cannot make it for the 3rd time. We have worked so hard for this. Glory is ours to take.

We understand that the Carroms event is highly competitive and the battle to become champions can last for more than 10 straight hours in one day. For example, in the last IAFG your team started playing at 9 am and ended slightly after 8 pm. As a captain of the team, how do you make sure that the team’s morale and spirit continue to be high for more than 10 straight hours?

I guess with the experience that we have gained from the previous IAFGs and with all the hard work and training that we have put in, we are mentally and physically prepared for the long battle. We also have the advantage that all the players are fully committed to the objective we have set out to do. The team spirit is strong.

We believe this year’s IAFG will probably last longer than 10 hours because there are more teams participating this year compared to previous years. In anyway, we are prepared for anything. Even if we need to play for 20 straight hours to win the Championship, we will do it. Not a problem.

Do you have any special request from the supporters?

We would really love to see our supporters there. It will give us more encouragement and the cheers will certainly boost our morale.

Deloitte Carroms Champions IAFG2008

The Carroms team has done it again for the third time in succession by putting Deloitte in the scoreboard with maximum 3 points in their IAFG2008 campaign. Congratulations to Prakash and his team for beating PwC in the finals. The victory was achieved in superb fashion beating all their opponents with a scoreline of 3 – 0 except for the finals where they gave the match away after knowing that they had won enough matches to be IAFG2008 CARROMS CHAMPIONS.

The team was in excellent form and the spirit was high. On their way to the finals, they defeated their opponents so quickly until they had to wait almost two hours before they know who the other finalist is. Kudos to the supporters who were there cheering them on from noon right up to the victory moment at about 8.00 pm. Even for those who could not turn up, words of encouragement to the team were sent via sms.

The Heroin for the night is our female player, Kak Su for winning all her matches in the competition and contributing 2 out of the 3 points needed to win in the finals. The 3 points in the finals against PwC came from the following matches;

Men 1st Singles – Zam (won 2 – 0)
Ladies Singles – Kak Su (won 2 – 0)
Mixed Doubles – Zakaria and Kak Su (won 2 – 1)

Champions – DELOITTE
Runner-up – PwC
Third – EY and PKF

Prakash, “We can now keep the trophy permanently in the cabinet for winning Carroms three times. I told you ‘No Problem’ and there is nothing to worry about. It has been a long day and we want to go celebrate”

Let this be the start of our many victories in the coming events. All of us must do our part to support the players and to cheer them on so that we can get more victories in our bag.

It was All Fun & Games in 2007 and along the way we created history by bagging the overall crown for the first time ever.

IAFG 2008 is dawning upon us and now is the time for you to heed the call. Many may consider that winning a championship once is a fluke but defending our title successfully will prove that we are the best.

Will you be the talisman that will bring us along the path of glory once again? To be prepared is half the victory. Do your part and contact the following individuals:-

IAFG 2008 (Teoh Wuey Sze)
  Jul

IAFG 2008 was officially “kick-off” (literally) yesterday with PWC beating SJGT 5-0 while E&Y drew with KPMG 1-1 in football, the first event of IAFG 2008. Our first game will be on July 2 and going into IAFG 2008 as the overall defending champion, all eyes will be on us. The time has come for us to show the rest that we did not emerged as overall champion last year based on luck, but because of our determination, commitment, dedication and sheer hard work.

Some has pointed out that this year’s IAFG spirit and enthusiasm seems to have fizzled out. Although the preparation for IAFG 2008 has started much later, I believe our preparation is progressing well due to a robust infrastructure, which was established over the last few years, in identifying new sporting talents, training and coaching. Furthermore, many of our talented players from the previous IAFG are still with us. The captains of each event have also shown their dedication and tireless effort in ensuring that their respective teams are well prepared and ready to roar.

I am also looking forward for a great support from the People of Deloitte for all the events. Half the mental battle is won when the stadium is filled with Deloitte supporters cheering relentlessly for our teams and players. So, let’s begin to rebuild the Deloitte spirit and defend the championship by coming in numbers to support our football team on July 2. I believe Deloitte can start IAFG 2008 with a “Bang”.

See you all at the games.

The General (R) speaks
  Jul

Last year, we ended our 31 year wait for IAFG glory as we were crowned IAFG2007 Champions. We have risen from ashes to become a phoenix or some may prefer a dragon and we definitely would want to stay that way. We can now walk with our heads held high with a significant achievement that speaks volume. A year has gone and many can’t wait for IAFG2008 to start either to continue to seek glory for the firm or to support those on their quest for gold.

Glory would not have been achieved without the support of the people and the dedication commitment and sacrifices from the ones that want to make it happen. We have proven that the Deloitte spirit has done it and let us now come together once more to make it two in a row. As most of you are aware Wuey Sze will be leading us this year and I sincerely hope that all of you would extend to him your fullest co-operation as you have to me. Last but not least, IAFG2007 was a good year but let’s make IAFG2008 and even better year.

Words from AMG (July 3, 2008) for the Deloitte Football Team

Many congratulations to the Team (for beating SJGT)
We need more supporters in our next match on Monday with KPMG

Best regards

Words from “The Fan”

“For those that have been around long enough, 2005 was a year no Deloitte football fan would want to remember. For 3 long years were haunted by our untimely exit in the hands of SJGT but we finally got the opportunity to redeem ourselves this year and redeemed ourselves we did by blasting 6 goals passed them and conceding none ourselves!

With the ghost of 2005 finally being laid to rest, the “real” battle for IAFG football supremacy begins now. From being the perennial whipping boys of IAFG, we have risen to become the undisputed football champion of IAFG for the last 2 years! With the 3rd consecutive title in sight, the Warriors would no doubt be charging full steam ahead and giving their all to ensure that the holy grail of football shall forever remain in our possession.

As our Warriors head into their next game against KPMG, we urge all supporters to please come out in full force and let our beloved Warriors know that they will never walk alone in this journey! Let it be known to our opponents that not only are our Warriors invincible but so are the supporters. Just as we did in 2007, let our fury and mighty roar be heard and tremble down their spines once again in 2008!

So, please mark it down on our calendar and drop whatever it is that you have to do come July 7, 2008 as we embark on our journey to the holy grail of football together with the Warriors. Let us drown the green football field with nothing but the blue of Deloitte!”   -The Fan-

DELOITTE 5 v KPMG 0
  Jul
8

A Demolition Act

Following a successful weekend of the carroms team, our highly motivated football team made sure that they are not spoiling the celebration by carrying out what they had set out to do against KPMG with flying colors.

The Warriors were expecting a very tough match ahead especially after KPMG has performed well in their earlier matches against EY and PWC. As soon as the referee blew his whistle signaling the start of the match, the Warriors did not waste any time and immediately pressed forward looking for an early goal. Every time when a KPMG player has the ball, even before he can fully control the ball, two to three Warriors will surround him attempting to repossess the ball from KPMG. The Warriors continued putting on the pressure through out the match and took control of it right from the start. By controlling the midfield area, the Warriors were able to play the match according to their rhythm. KPMG must have felt like playing against 20 players. They were unable to keep possession of the ball for long. The Warriors capitalised their speed with both their flanks tearing down the opponent’s defense. The first goal came in early in the first half from Puvan connecting a long pass from Kenny who avoided a few tackles while building up a move along the sideline. After that goal, Deloitte had total dominance of the match. The other 4 goals were contributed by Awie (2), Syed (1) and Zul (1). What a demolition display by the Warriors.

A special thanks to AMG who was there with the partners / directors (Mr Yee, Mr Cheong, Mr Chu, Chee Ming, Wuey Sze, Jimmy, Stanley and Jeremy) together with the supporters to cheer on the players.

Please feel free to send your congratulatory words to the football team by clicking the ‘Comment’ box below.

How is the team’s preparation for this year’s competition?

Our team has been training aggressively for the past 2 months to polish our skills. Judging from the regular training sessions and the morale of our team, I am confident that our team is ready to face the other competitors in hopes of winning the title again.

With the 1st game on 8th July 2008 (Tuesday), do you foresee any obstacles/problems advancing to the knock-out stages?

For this year’s competition, the number of teams participating has increased. As such, we should never underestimate our opponents as they may be able to pull an upset on the Big Guns. Being the defending champion, the pressure will definitely be on us. However, we can assure you that we will give our very best for Deloitte to retain the trophy at our office for the 4th year running.

What would you like to say to your Deloitte supporters?

It was great having all our supporters to cheer us on for the past few years. We hope that the tradition will not stop and we welcome all our supporters (both old and new staff) to our games on 8th July 2008 and 10th July 2008 (“cross-fingers”). With your roaring presence, we will once again triumph and bring glory to Deloitte!!

CALLING EVERYONE

Words from AMG

"When I met Prakash (Carroms Captain) in the lift recently, I asked him of our chances of keeping the title for the third successive time and he replied “no problem, we have been training everyday”. Well folks, that is the real Deloitte spirit that I like – the commitment and confidence to win. Winning any game in the lion’s den itself (PWC centre) is no easy task but all the same  the team did us proud by winning it in style, beating PWC 3-0 in the final. Congratulations Team, well done and thanks for being able to keep the Trophy for us, this time, permanently in our office. This should inspire the other Teams to win as well. See you at the games, folks, we need all the support that we can get".

The Fan writes again

Hola! First and foremost, The Fan wishes to congratulate the Warriors for their near flawless display of soccer mastery against KPMG. Not to take any credit away from KPMG (3 cheers to them as well…Hip! Hip! Hip! Hooray! x3), on behalf of all the supporters, The Fan salutes the Warriors!!

Just a few years ago, it was unfortunate for The Fan to be among the few to witness what many would called the “dark years” of Deloitte in IAFG. For years, the Warriors were the laughing stock of IAFG soccer but not anymore. Over the last 3 years, they have given us a reason to cheer and at the same time taught us all (including The Fan) a thing or two about this game.

Since the beginning of IAFG 2008, The Fan noticed that the number of supporters turning up was a little below expectation considering the fact that we had such a bumper crowd attendance back in 2007. But The Fan is sure that the numbers will pick up very soon as we head into the crucial stages of our campaign.

Let us get the fan fare rolling by coming out in numbers today (July 9, 2008) to support our Warriors in their game against Ernst & Young (EY) whereby an outright victory would ensure us a spot in the final for the 3rd consecutive year!!

Many would say that the outcome of this match is a foregone conclusion based on the current performance ditched out by the Warriors so far. However, when The Fan remembers last years football finals to the sudden death penalty shoot out. EY are a force to be reckoned with.

Mind you that every single victory earned by the Warriors to-date is the result of countless hours of training, dedication and sacrifices made by the Warrriors themselves. But these victories would be meaningless if it cannot be shared especially with the supporters for they are “the spectators” whom the Warriors have been “performing” to in showcasing their skills and flairs on the field.

Once again, The Fan urges all supporters no matter where you are, please come out and let our voice be heard as ONE today as our beloved Warriors stroll onto the field in their quest to give us another classic performance.  To all supervisors/managers, you can do your part by allowing your charges this time off in the name of the FIRM being NO. 1.

The Fan has mentioned this before and will keep repeating it, LET US DROWN THE GREEN FOOTBAL FIELD WITH NOTHING BUT THE BLUE OF DELOITTE! (Okay, perhaps save some green for our little dot).  The Fan will be there today…will you be?

Deloitte Warriors, Onwards To Victory”

DELOITTE (3) vs KPMG (2)

Deloitte qualified for the semi-finals after beating KPMG in the quarter-finals yesterday. The three (3) winning points for Deloitte were contributed by the following matches: -

·          Men Singles – Choo Sim Guan (3 – 0)

·          Ladies Singles – Beh Lee Fong (3 – 0)

·          Mixed Doubles – Choo Sim Guan and Beh Lee Fong (3 – 0)

Deloitte will be meeting PKF in the semi-finals on 10th July 2008. We look forward to seeing more supporters at the game against PKF as the match promises to be an exciting event. We would need the voices or rather the "ROAR" of Deloitte to spur on our Team to the finals.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And not to forget, today our warriors look to book the ticket to the Final with a match against last year's runner-up, EY.
COME CHEER THE WARRIORS ON!

DELOITTE (6) vs EY (0)

With the win against EY, Deloitte has now qualified for the finals of the IAFG2008 football event despite only having played 3 matches with one match in hand. The huge goal margin was a surprise to many as EY was last year’s finalist who lost to the Warriors narrowly through penalty kicks at the IAFG2007 football finals. To some of us this result would certainly be a sweet revenge erasing a bitter memory where EY trashed Deloitte 4 – 1 back in the IAFG2004 at the same venue. Striker Gary Huang would definitely remember this very clearly as he was the player who scored the solitary goal for Deloitte at that time.

The Warriors started the match in the same fashion as in their previous matches immediately putting the opponent’s defense under pressure with their speed and accurate passes. The Warriors dominated ball possession and had total control of the game. The fans did not have to wait long before Jeffery Kamarudin opened the score from a long range shot outside the penalty box. The Warriors took full opportunity of the opponent’s under performed reserve goalkeeper by scoring another 2 goals before their regular goalie came in as a substitute. However, it was a little too late for the opponent to recover from a 3 goal deficit. With most of their players tired out, the opponents found it difficult to keep the Warriors at bay and conceded another 3 goals in the second half. The goal margin might not have been that big if EY was not playing with a depleted side as their star striker, Anuar had to sit out of the match due to injury.

Congratulations to Awie for scoring a hat-trick, Jeffery, Syed and goalkeeper, Azrul for scoring one goal each. After three matches, the Warriors have scored a record total of 17 goals and conceded none. The Warriors are one match away from successfully defending their championship and their most likely opponent in the Finals on Monday is PwC. As Supporters, our job is not done yet, and we must now give the Warriors the greatest cheer of their life in the Finals against PwC. Our coach has said, all the 17 goals mean nothing in the Finals because the match starts with a 0 – 0 score and not 17 – 0. Let us now block out 14 July in our calendar and make an appointment to be at the stadium to cheer on our Warriors.

Table Tennis...two more steps to Glory!
  Jul
10

Today is the 10th of July 2008 and IAFG 2008 is already more than a week old. So far, everything has been going on as plan and we have yet to taste defeat in any of the games so far.

Tonight, at Kelab Sukan DBKL, our table tennis team will be up against PKF in the Semi-Finals of the Table Tennis competition. In view that we have been winning the table tennis competition for 3 consecutive years, everyone thinks it’s a forgone conclusion that we will win again for the 4th year running. However, not to many years ago, everyone thought playing against Deloitte was a definite victory.

Every team in the IAFG, big or small, has a chance of victory! While we may not be able to represent Deloitte in the games, there is another way we can help and savour the victory – by coming to support our team and cheering them on. Every player loves to hear the thunderous cheers of the crowd behind them. It gives them the extra boost…the extra ten percent they need to win the games. We may not know the players names, but we all, as one will cheer for Deloitte!

For the past few games, we noticed more partners and directors turning up to show their support to the games. Hence, we hope that this will motivate more Deloitte staff to come and show their support to the Firm. Tonight, is the Semi-Finals of Table Tennis, and if we make it past PKF, we will be playing in the Finals for glory once again. Do come and show your support to the team. Give them the extra and give them the pride for playing for Deloitte. Show our competitors that Deloitte has not only good players, but also magnificent supporters. Hopefully, we will take home another three points tonight!!

An Introduction to Deloitte's IAFG2008 Basketball Team
  Jul
11

Winning the championship for two years running may seem like an easy task to some. But behind the scenes, a lot of effort has been put in by each player in ensuring that the Deloitte basketball team are crowned champs.

This year is no different from the past few years as the Deloitte basketball team has been training twice weekly since early-April until now. We believe that the IAFG2008 basketball team is a more formidable and balanced team as compared to previous years. Several of our players have also recently participated in open tournaments as part of their physical and mental preparation as IAFG2008 approaches.

With the group matches being held this Saturday (12 July 2008), we are looking forward to meeting our competitors and possibly develop strategies to counter the other teams. Being the defending champions, the pressure will be on us to deliver and potentially bring back the trophy to Deloitte by emerging champions for the third year in a row.

Therefore, on behalf of the Deloitte IAFG2008 Basketball Team, I wish to invite all Deloitte-eans to Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Club this Saturday to witness one of the world’s most popular sports being played at its best. Do come in numbers to show your support and we will definitely not disappoint you.

SEMI-FINALS BECKONS

Early Saturday morning, 12th July 2008, our basketball team (together with a band of loyal supporters) were warming up and getting ready to start defending their title of the IAFG Basketball champions.  The team (and supporters) didn’t show any signs of sleepiness and went straight into action against AAC and Horwath within an hour.  The team was victorious for both games with the following scores:-

BREAKING NEWS - DELOITTE (5) - KPMG (0)

“Dear Deloitte-eans,

Most of you may realise that tennis was one of the first games to begin training; in fact we started in late-March. The turnout in the beginning was very promising and we quickly found promising talent for our IAFG 2008 challenge. For all of you who don’t know, Deloitte has never won the tennis event before and so we had a daunting task ahead of us.

Our tennis team this year comprises of some old hands……Saw Wei Hun, Chua Hun Yew, Jimmy Ung, Yeoh Wen Ching and Anna Abdul Aziz; some new guns include Ivan Choo and Charmaine Lai.

It is my firm belief that we have prepared well and Deloitte’s chances of re-writing history this year for the tennis event is very strong. The team has trained exceptionally hard, exhibited exceptional commitment and given a lot of their personal time to train for the Deloitte IAFG team. Today (14th July 2008), we will be facing KPMG and I believe today's our D-Day. I hope all of you can give us the support we need to overcome our opponents. I urge all of you to take 1 hour out of your work schedule to come cheer us on at Duta National Tennis Centre @ 5.30pm.

It’s All For Gold!!!”

CALLING ALL SUPPORTERS
  Jul
14

Buenos Dias! Since this morning there has been a buzz of excitement going around the office. Just about everyone seems to be busy talking about the IAFG football final tonight. In the midst of all these excitement, please allow The Fan to take you on a journey back in time, to the night of August 2, 2007.

The venue was Selayang Municipal Stadium. The time was approximately 8 pm and the stadium was filled with screaming enthusiastic supporters with The Fan being one of them. It was the scene of the football final where the Warriors were playing against EY for the second year running. From the first whistle up until the final whistle, it was non-stop end-to-end action. Finally, it came down to a deciding penalty shoot-out and our Warriors came out victorious at the end of the day.

Fast forward to the present day. Everyone that stood in our path has fallen along the way. It seems that PwC has taken over the reign from EY this year and decided to give our beloved Warriors a run for their money. Well, a pat on their back for trying but as we all know, another one will bite the dust tonight and The Fan can assure you it ain’t going to be our Warriors!

On behalf of the Warriors, The Fan urges all citizen of Deloitte to make your way to the MPSJ Sports Complex tonight at 8 pm to not only lend your voice and support to our beloved Warriors but to also witness history in the making as we will be gunning for our 3rd consecutive football crown!

We have been trembling our opponents for the last 2 years. Let’s bring down the stadium this year! So, please make yourself available tonight and cheer like you have never cheered before. Let our Warriors know that we are behind them all the way 100%!

Cometh the Moment, Cometh The Heroes…

 THRILLING FINALS

In the much anticipated football finals between Deloitte and PwC, Deloitte overcame the odds to emerge champions for the 3rd year running by beating PwC 2 – 1, thus securing the trophy at our office. It was an exhilarating match as both teams played brilliantly throughout the 70 minutes. Kudos to our Warriors for holding on the lead even though we were two (2) men down!

Hip Hip Hooray, Deloitte!

A GOOD START
  Jul
15

It was a wet day at the National Tennis Complex, Jalan Duta as the rain continued pouring until the late hours. Teams that arrived at the venue hoping to kickstart their campaign at 5.30pm had to wait for at least two (2) hours before the games could begin. Deloitte were up against the gutsy KPMG for their 1st game while the other game between EY and PwC was postponed.

With the women’s singles match starting at 7.30pm, it looked as if this was going to be a long night for our tennis team. Against all odds, Deloitte began its tennis campaign with a BANG by taking a clean sweep for all the 5 matches against KPMG. It was a really good start in our quest to re-write history in the tennis event! The results of the matches are as follows:-

Women’s Singles
Charmaine Lai (6-1, 6-1)

1st Men’s Singles
Ivan Choo (6-0, 6-0)

2nd Men’s Singles
Chua Hun Yew (6-0, 6-0)

Mixed Doubles
Charmaine Lai/Ivan Choo (6-0, 6-1)

Men’s Doubles
Chua Hun Yew/Saw Wei Hun (6-0, 6-0)

After such promising results against KPMG, Deloitte will be facing EY tomorrow at the National Tennis Complex, Jalan Duta @ 5.30pm for their 2nd round robin game. Do come and show your support to our tennis team! In return, our tennis team promises an exciting game, if not, another clean sweep to fulfill their destiny as IAFG2008 Tennis Champions!

CHAMPIONS

PwC (1) v Deloitte (2)
(Halftime score 0 – 0)

A DESERVED VICTORY

Following the successful exploits by our Carroms and Table-Tennis Team, the Deloitte WARRIORS clinched another 3 points for Deloitte in spectacular fashion by defending the trophy and bringing the Prestigious IAFG Football Trophy to Deloitte for good.

The Warriors were expecting a tough match ahead and that’s how the game started. The opening exchanges were scrappy with the PwC team doing everything within their resources to ensure that the Warriors were not able to get into the rhythm. Slowly but surely, the Warriors started pushing forward and were able to execute some good moves while pushing PwC back. The flow of the game however was interrupted by numerous fouls and the ball going out of play, effectively with both teams cancelling each other out.

With a third of the first half remaining, the game took a change for the unexpected when one of the Warriors received his marching orders for a foul. Everyone who was at the game had an opinion about the red card, but unfortunately we were down to ten men against eleven.

The Warriors then steeled themselves up after the loss of their player and focused on defending the game. Even in this situation, we managed to hit the post and were still attacking, but PwC had the upper hand. The crowd of Deloitte supporters also did their bit by cheering as much as possible to raise the Warriors spirits to battle on. In the ending moments before the end of the first half, PwC had managed to use the additional man to their advantage and every one from Deloitte was relieved to hear the half time whistle.

After the half time break, the Warriors came forward with greater resolve and had tactically adjusted to a new formation and managed to take the lead via a cool finish by Puvan. The crowd and players erupted into wild cheers and scenes of joy at this.   The joy was shortlived as PwC managed to equalize soon after that. With the pressure mounting, one of our players was hacked down in opponent’s penalty box and we were awarded a penalty. Awie kept his cool and converted and once again we were in the lead.

The game was not without further drama as we ended the game with only nine men as one more of our Warriors received his marching orders. But the Warriors held on the lead and WON!!! And it was indeed a truly amazing display by the players which only could be understood by everyone who was watching the game yesterday.

A special thanks to AMG who was there with the partners / directors (Mr Ng Meng Kwai, Mr Robert Tan, Mr Cheong, Mr Chu, Mr Alex, Mr Mak, Mr Yee, Wesley, Wuey Sze, Jimmy, Stanley, Segaran, Weina and Jeremy) together with the supporters to cheer on the players.

'PROFESSIONALISM' AT ITS BEST...
  Jul
15

Another new chapter was written in the history of Deloitte on the night of July 14, 2008. It was a night The Fan is sure no fellow Deloitte-ean would ever forget for a very very long time to come. There were moments of joy, despair and not to mention gut-wrenching as we watched our Warriors who were down to 9 men at the end of the match, battled their way to a 2-1 victory against PwC.

Even before the match has begun, many have thought that the outcome of the match was already a foregone conclusion with an easy outright win to the Warriors. Honestly, The Fan thought the same too and we nearly ended with the same fate that struck the Dutch football team in the recently concluded EURO 2008!

As far as The Fan is concern, the Warriors were playing against 12 men instead of 11! It seems that the man in black who was supposed to be keeping the match in balance was blowing his whistle almost at free will against the Warriors. We have all heard of home ground advantage but boy, this gentleman surely has taken it’s meaning to a whole new level all together! Now The Fan understands why the football fraternity of this country is going down the drain when even their so called professionally trained match officials can ditch such a disgraceful performance! Heck! If that is what it takes to be a so called accredited referee by the football association, then every Ali, Ah Chong or Muthu on the street can easily cari makan as a professional referee! The shouts of “Referee Kayu” and Referee Buta” do not even do justice to such despicable level of match officiating.

The Fan may not have professional training but to say that last night’s officiating was a blatant biasness is definitely an utter understatement. Many football fans around the world seem to dub the infamous “Hand of God” by the great Diego Maradona as one of the great blunders by match officials in the history of football. The Fan beckons otherwise. We have just found the class act that will toppled it all! The Fan wonders now if the referee even has a valid refereeing license to begin with!

Despite being down to 9 men and playing against 12 men, our Warriors still manage to keep their calm and carved out a deserving victory. Everyone in the stadium gave their all. The players gave the performance of their lives and supporters gave the cheer of their lives.  All in all, it was another memorable night for Team Deloitte, the Warriors and most importantly, the wave of supporters that came.

Kudos to the Warriors for hanging in there and the supporters that stood by them along the way!

“Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish”

DELOITTE (4) vs EY (1)

Dear All,

Firstly. I would like to say “Well done” to the Deloitte tennis players who gave their sweat and wore their hearts on their sleeves to play for Deloitte tonight. I applaud your unwavering focus, unending tenacity and desire to compete with integrity.

Equally important, on behalf of the tennis players, I would like to say a big “Thank You” to all the supporters that came out to support us; your every shout, every clap and every cheer meant so much to each and every one of us.

Tonight makes me especially proud to be the captain for Deloitte tennis. It is ironic that the proudest moment was the moment we lost the last tie of the night; the men’s doubles. Chua Hun Yew and Saw Wei Hun went down 6-7 4-6 after a struggle that lasted about 2 hours. It is my personal belief as an athlete that it’s not solely about winning and losing, rather HOW you win, and HOW you lose. On several occasions tonight, Deloitte players hit the ball into the court, only to be called out by the linesman; but the supporters on the sideline, including me saw that it was clearly in. Despite these setbacks, our duo respected their calls and continued playing displaying honesty and integrity; furthermore, Hun Yew and Wei Hun were ready to applaud high quality shots from their opponents; it was exemplary sportsmanship.

Hun Yew and Wei Hun fought like lions, dashing from side to side, front to back, plunging into the fence to retrieve lobs, never giving up on any ball - it was stuff of champions. The final result was Deloitte 4, EY 1 but in my eyes, we won 5-0. The camaraderie between Hun Yew and Wei Hun was admirable; no matter how many points they had lost in a row, or not matter how many games they trailed; they patted each other on the back and they encouraged each other all the way: they displayed incredible commitment to each other on the court - a lesson to learn for all our athletes in the games ahead.

For the benefit of those who don’t know, Wei Hun has come to play for Deloitte from our Penang office, he has done so for the last 4 years (now that’s what I call commitment) and he has only met Hun Yew twice; they hardly know each other, but they came together for a common cause. On 5th August, we will play the deciding tie against PWC; if we win that tie, we will do what no other Deloitte team has done before and that is win IAFG tennis. If Wei Hun can take a bus from Penang to play tennis and then take the night bus home, I hope all Deloitteans can show him your commitment by supporting him and his team mates on August 5th at Duta Courts against PWC. It will also be our crowning moment should we win the tie on that day.

I would like to stress again that it’s HOW you win and HOW you lose that matters more than the result itself; if you are dishonest, then you have already lost before you finish. The sportsmanship, integrity and commitment displayed by Deloitte tennis players on the court today has been second to none; let us all not forget that in the spirit of IAFG.

Ivan – Thanks for showing them how tennis is played; I appreciate your spirit and positive attitude towards representing Deloitte for the first time
Hun Yew – You ran your socks off and you showed fantastic commitment, what else can I say…..cheers buddy
Wei Hun – Model team player; this year you’ve played more tennis than the last 3 years, we owe that to you - stick around, one more game to go for this year.
Charmaine – My gratitude for your infectious enthusiasm
Jimmy, Anna, Wen Ching – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, your efforts are no less and your commitment has been no less than the others for the last 2.5 months; my heartfelt appreciation for being team players the whole way, the victory will be for all of us to savour

To all the Deloitte Supporters especially AMG, Chee Ming and Wuey Sze – THANK YOU SO MUCH for coming out to support your tennis team.

TEAM DELOITTE - THE STORY THUS FAR...
  Jul
18

It has been a great start to our IAFG campaign so far. Those that we have vanquished along the way may even credit the victories achieved by Team Deloitte to mere flukes. Well, they are entitle to say and think whatever they want for we, at Deloitte shall not stood to their level and bicker at just about everything under the sun! As gracious as we are in winning, we are equally humble in accepting defeats in order for us to improve on our shortcomings. Thank you, Tennis Team for showing us all the true spirit of IAFG and sportsmanship. Keep up the good job! We know history will be re-written come August 5, 2008.

As our tennis captain put it himself, “It is not about winning or losing but rather how you win and how you lose.” It seems to The Fan that the other firms have not gotten use to the emergence of Team Deloitte in the arena of IAFG. Apparently they are still too engrossed in their own worlds where Deloitte has and will always remain the perennial whipping team as far as the Big 4s are concern. Well, to all of you out there…wakey, wakey…a sleeping tiger has awakened! Better get use to be at the receiving end instead for Team Deloitte is here to stay for a long long time to come.

Surreal as it may be, our success was not achieved over night. Heck! Even we all know Rome was not built in a day. Throughout the years, The Fan has had the honour to witness in first hand how Team Deloitte, made up of a bunch of misfits then was built and molded into what it is today, a team of disciplined and efficient sportsmen and sportswomen. Let us not forget the countless hours (on top of the regular 8.5 hours one has to put in at work daily), sweat, blood and sacrifice made by each of them over the years simply for one common goal, to bring glory to Deloitte.

An integral part of Team Deloitte’s success is the unwavering support shown from all fellow Deloitte-eans over the years. Being the smallest firm (in terms of headcount) among the Big 4s, The Fan honestly could not recall one single event of IAFG where the number of Deloitte supporters did not easily outnumber their counterparts on any give day or time. The trademark Deloitte roar and cheer has become such an integral part of our IAFG campaign that no event involving Deloitte would be complete without our own bunch of misfit supporters! To be part of this huge and loud crowd has indeed been an honour to The Fan.

We are almost reaching the quarter mark of IAFG 2008. With 3 titles already in the bag and one impending title before the end of this week (God willing), Team Deloitte is well on track to create another history, to successfully defend our overall crown. A couple more titles will be decided before we bid adieu to the month of July and head full steam into a packed August. The supporters have cheered our carom, football and table tennis teams to glory. Let’s not stop there. Please come out in numbers to spur our athletes for the remaining games of IAFG 2008. Let us continue our journey with basketball this Saturday, July 19, 2008 as our team goes searching for another unprecedented 3rd win!

A special thank you to those ex-Deloitte-eans who have left encouraging messages and wishes on our website. It is good to know that you may take a person away from the firm but you can’t take the firm away from the person. The Fan will always cherish this indefinable camaraderie that exists among fellow Deloitte-eans.

Keep up the good job, fellow Deloitte-eans.

-The Fan-

THE IAFG 2008 BASKETBALL FINALS

DELOITTE vs KPMG

For the third consecutive year, the same two teams are going to battle it out to be crowned the IAFG Basketball Champions.  We have won this event two times consecutively and hope to bring the IAFG Basketball trophy to Deloitte for good.

For those who have never been to a basketball final, anyone will tell you that the feeling to be there is electric.  And the performances of the teams depend to a certain percentage to the supporter’s presence and voices.  This is in view of the close proximity of the players and the supporters in the game of basketball.

WE NEED YOUR VOICES AND SUPPORT!!

We look forward to seeing as many people tomorrow as possible. Enjoying the game and cheering for DELOITTE would be among the best ways possible to start a good weekend.  Please refer to the upcoming events column for the location map.

DARTS
  Jul

Our first match against KPMG on Tuesday will be a daunting task as KPMG was the last IAFG finalist and also one of the favorites to take the champions crown for darts this year. Some even say it is like David vs Goliath. However, I can assure you all that the Deloitte darts team will certainly not concede defeat without giving their very best in this match. We have put in the training hours and prepared ourselves to the best as we can for this competition despite the fact that we knew we are against KPMG. Who knows we might surprise everyone that night.

I totally agree with Choong (the Tennis Captain) who inspired all of us including the Darts team with his words, “it’s not solely about winning and losing, rather HOW you win, and HOW you lose”. I believe he said those words to imply on good sportsmanship but I interpret it and apply it a little differently here that is it not important what the outcome of the match is so long as we know we have given our very best.

We are not giving up yet and we hope the supporters will also not give up on us. Do come and support us as we will need all the help that we can have to defeat our opponent.

Rosli – Deloitte Darts Captain

DELOITTE (62) def KPMG (40)

THIRD TIME IS A CHARM

The Deloitte basketball team made it 3 wins in a row in the finals against KPMG and brought home the IAFG Basketball trophy. With the three consecutive wins, the trophy is now ours.

Just like our football team, our basketball team walked into the finals as the odd on favorites to retain the trophy. But the team was cautious, knowing that in the finals of any IAFG match, anything can and will happen.

KPMG fielded a new look team this year, hoping for a reversal of the past two years and wrest the title of IAFG Basketball champions that we had taken from them two years ago. However, with our team was the first to settle into the game and we were on a roll. By the end of the second quarter, we had taken a 43 – 13 lead.

The third quarter, KPMG showed more resolve and managed to claw back some points, but with all due respect to their team, the better team won. Our team, led by Foong, the captain and the twin top scorers, Shenton and Terry played excellent basketball to win the IAFG basketball trophy easier then the last two times. Final score, 62 – 40.

The basketball team would like to thank our supporters including the partners and directors which had turned up in numbers early Saturday morning to cheer the team on. Also, a very special mention goes out to our Johor Bahru Branch which has given tremendous support by having their staff travelled all the way to KL numerous times for the trainings and in taking part in the competition. A special thank you to our JB player, Sam for his sacrifices and contributions to the basketball team.

DELOITTE lost to KPMG

(1 - 3)

THE DARTS TEAM

Yesterday our darts’ team gave their very best against KPMG. They knew at the beginning that winning this match is an uphill task. Nevermind that they have lost the match, but what is important is HOW they lost the match. They gave all their best and even manage to steal a point from KPMG in the 2nd men singles. They certainly did not give KPMG an easy time only losing to them in rubber sets for both Ladies Singles and Men Doubles. Keep it up guys and we will certainly try harder in the next IAFG. We will be back for darts. A big thank you to captain Rosli and team for putting up a gallant fight in yesterday’s match.

Introducing our Deloitte IAFG 2008 pool team members: -

1.        Riddzuan
2.        Shaharol
3.        Jeremy Ng
4.        Yow Yee Meng
5.        June Mok
6.        Naziatul
7.        Chai Ee Vone

We were the pool champions for the IAFG 2006 but unfortunately, we did not manage to defend our title in last year’s IAFG and lost to the eventual champions in the first round.  This year we are more prepared and will definitely try our very best to take the title back.

As most of us know, the pool event is very competitive event where just about any participating team has a chance of becoming champions. This year, nine (9) firms will be taking part on a knock-out format and there are no clear favorites. The Deloitte pool team will require all the help and support that they can get to have that slight edge over the others i.e. the ‘X’ factor. I hereby urge all the Deloitte-eans to spare some of your time to come and cheer for our pool team. Let the cheers of Deloitte-eans inspire our players and give them the ‘x’ factor which they are looking for.

The IAFG 2008 pool competition will start this Saturday, July 26, 2008, 1 pm at Breakers, Sri Hartamas. See you all there.

Looking for the “X”

Looking for the “X”

Saturday seems to be the day we are looking for the “X”. “X” factor for the pool team and “X” (strikes) on the bowling alley. We have the same team as the one that won the title last year and broke several IAFG records along the way. The team is as follows:-

Alex :               Best men bowler for IAFG2007. One of the best lefties and has improved in terms of adapting to different lane oiling conditions.

Melvin :           Has put on some weight since then but can still bowl as well as the oldself. Still the same down to earth person. He has vowed to do better this year. And even with the additional weight, his hunger is even stronger now.

Kee Bank :      Still as thin as last year. Improved on controlling the strike ball.

Alvin Koo :      He is the new guy in the team and playing great at the moment.

Pau San :        She needs no introduction. She is our iron lady with a heart of gold. She adapts well to different lane conditions and has the experience to bring out the best in herself no matter what the condition of the lanes is.

Swee May :     She has been in our team for the past three years. She is continuously seeking feedback from the team to improve further and doing great at the moment.

When these few guys and girls come together it is “EXPLOSION” and well, this is best team that Deloitte has ever had in the last five years. Eventhough there are so many obstacles along the way, we look forward to having the IAFG2008 supporters all the way and its ability to synergise with our team will enable us to excel.

The team is determined to show that we can defend our title and other teams will need to play supernaturally well in order to take the title away from us.

GOLF

Tomorrow morning at 8am, our golf team will tee off in hope of continuing the excellent start to the IAFG2008. Last year, at Perangsang Templer Golf and Country Club, our team came in second place. Our golfers, which is virtually unchanged, comprise of the following:-

Encik Azman

Encik Chudi

Chu Siew Koon

Kenneth Chong

Tan Ming Heng; and

Jimmy Ung (The Captain)

As quoted by Jimmy, golf is unpredictable and anything can happen on competition day. But no matter what, we will try our best to wrest the top placing from perennial winners, PWC.

We wish the team all the best.

I've always made a total effort, even when the odds seemed entirely against me. I never quit trying; I never felt that I didn't have a chance to win." -Arnold Palmer

CHAMPIONS AGAIN PT1

VICTORY NO 5

BREAKERS – 26th July 2008

The pool team (together with the large band of supporters) were at Breakers from 1pm on Saturday afternoon. The team comprising of Riddzuan, Shaharol, Jeremy, Yee Meng, Naziatul, June and Ee Vone together with Edmund seemed more confident and poised, being handed a more favorable draw as compared to last year and also fresh from the week of intensive training.

First game was against SJGT and was kicked off concurrently with all other firms except the defending champions EY who were given a bye. Things moved well and we were soon leading 1 – 0 with Shaharol dispatching his opponent and Naziatul continuing to make the lead 2-0. Soon after that Riddzuan clinched the third point to ensure our progress to the Semi-Finals with at least one point in hand. Although Deloitte had already won that game, June and Jeremy continued to play the final two matches since PWC and BDO game was still ongoing. Final score : Deloitte def SJGT 5-0 and qualified for the Semi-Finals.

After a short wait, PWC had overcome BDO and after a short rest period, it was PwC vs Deloitte for the Semi-Finals. Shaharol continued his winning streak giving us the first point. Naziatul didn’t start too well by making several errors. However, she overcame the odds and rose to the occasion to deliver the second point. Riddzuan then made it 3-0 to confirm the place in the Finals. With the other two games rendered meaningless, the team (and supporters) took a break. Kudos to PwC supporters at this point of time as they conducted themselves with great sportsmanship.

Then was the wait to the Finals. EY was still battling it out with KPMG in the Quarter-Finals while Russell Bedford (RBL) awaited the winners for the Semi-Finals. EY then moved on the Semi’s and RBL had then conceded a walkover in view that their players had other commitments as it was already rather late.

So, the Final was the rematch of last year's opening match - EY, the 2007 pool champions vs Deloitte, the 2006 champions to determine the 2008 pool champions. All 5 matches were played concurrently, the men playing 9-ball pool and the women 8 ball. It was a race to 7 for the men, and the best of 7 for the women.

Yee Meng, started the crowd roaring by collecting the first point of his game to lead his match 1-0, and the cheers continued when Riddzuan also took the lead in his game and shortly after that Naziatul also took the lead in her game, while June and Shaharol didn’t start off too well.

The games continued and Deloitte scored the first point with Riddzuan defeating his opponent 7 -0. At this juncture, Naziatul was up 2 -0 for the match, Yee Meng 4-1 for his match, June 2 -1 in her match and Shaharol was down 3-2.

Naziatul soon wrapped up her match to gain the second point for Deloitte and all the attention were shifted to the remaining 3 games still ongoing. The Deloitte team was trying their best to ensure the pool championship became theirs. Shaharol was still trailing while Yee Meng and June had both taken the lead. Unfortunately for all his efforts, Shaharol was defeated by his highly rated opponent 7-5. Everyone cheered for Shaharol at this point as he had put in a stellar match and tried his best to defeat his opponent, arguably the best pool player in the IAFG. Things didn’t seem too good for Deloitte at this juncture as Yee Meng and June had lost two matches consecutively and the scores were 6-5 and 3-3 respectively. As the pressure was mounting, victory could go either way. Tensions were running high, and all the players were making unforced errors. Then, Yee Meng managed to take the initiative from his opponent and sealed the victory for Deloitte with a supremely cool finish under pressure. We won the IAFG Pool Championship with the score of 3-1. It was a sweet victory for the team after all the controversy last year.

BOWLING : CLOUD NINE

VICTORY NO 6

It was definitely a memorable night at the Pyramid Megalanes on Saturday night where Deloitte set the bowling lanes ablaze with their strikes/spares and ultimately bagging the bowling title for the second year consecutively.

Joseph and team maintained their cool throughout the whole tournament which lasted about 3 hours to clinch the title with a total of 2600 points in the best-of-three games. Our closest competitors were KPMG and PwC with a total of 2565 points and 2516 points respectively.

Tension could be felt by our players (and the supporters) at the end of the second game as only 4 teams (KPMG, PwC, EY and Deloitte) showed consistency/improvement in their game to lead the pack of 17 teams.

At the end of the second game, Deloitte were trailing KPMG by a mere 15 points with PwC and EY trailing very closely behind the leading two. PwC scored 905 in the second game and as we headed into the final game, all our competitors were all within a shot of winning the IAFG 2008 Bowling Trophy. High stakes indeed.

In the third and final game, KPMG who completed their third game in lightning speed was still in the lead at that time scoring 803 pin falls while Deloitte was just half way through their third game. Our bowlers who were bowling next to KPMG were constantly being updated by their captain, Joseph and team were aware that they had to score more than 818 pins to have a very good chance of winning the championship. With the cheers of the huge number of Deloitte Supporters behind them who were there until late night spurring the team on, our bowlers gave all they had, using every ounce of energy left scoring strikes after strikes with the final pin fall of 853 to confirm at least a second place. Then began the wait to hope that PwC did not score above 883 and we would be confirmed as the IAFG 2008 Bowling Champions.

By 11pm, both the team and the supporters were already on ‘cloud nine’ as PwC wrapped up their final game. It was shouts and cheers at the Pyramid Megalanes as Deloitte supporters swarmed our bowling team to congratulate them for defending the title and also contributing another 3 points to our tally.

Path to Glory
  Jul
30

The morning of July 26, 2008 started with a tad of gloominess and immediately The Fan thought that it might not augur well for Team Deloitte as we had 2 very important events to contest in the later part of the day i.e. pool and bowling. Nevertheless, come what may Team Deloitte will have to bite the bullet and be prepared for what ever that lies ahead in their quest for IAFG glory.

And bite the bullet they did! Our pool team started their campaign at one in the afternoon and by the time they wrapped up their last game, the sun had already set. It took the team nearly 7 hours to be crowned Pool Champion of IAFG 2008. Congratulations, team!

Immediately thereafter, everyone including The Fan was rushing to Sunway Pyramid for the bowling event. Things did not look too well for Team Deloitte in the early stages but they hung in there and did not let the scores of supporters that turned up that night to spur them on. And not long after that, victory #2 for the night was nicely tucked in the bag! Another job well done, team. Kudos to the bowlers, Bowling Champions of IAFG 2008.

It was indeed a memorable Saturday for The Fan and the score of supporters to cherish. To snatch all 6 points at stake is a prime example of Deloitte’s enthusiasm and grit. Even the Gods were smiling down at us. It is now 6 wins out of 8 events contested to-date and Team Deloitte can expect more wins to come.

The supporters once again lived up to their reputation and nearly brought down the house with their ferocious cheer. You guys and girls definitely lit up the atmosphere in Breakers and Pyramid Megalanes! If there is a best supporters’ award, The Fan knows for sure we will win it hands down without a doubt.

To the rest of the athletes who will be going down the “war path” soon, we will be there for you!!

And to the supporters, keep on cheering!!!! 11 more events to go and we will hopefully stand up as the 2008 IAFG Champions.

BADMINTON

The Deloitte Badminton Team, for the first time in many years, made it into the semi-final of last year’s event and contributed 1 point en route for Deloitte to clinch the IAFG Overall Champion for the first time in 31 years. This was done, of course, with the players’ relentless training and commitment each of them shown before and during the badminton event.

There have been not many changes to the current year’s team as compared to previous years. The 2008 team is made out of Lih Xiang and Han Nee from Tax Dept, Kevin Lee, Eng Teck and Eugene Tan from CRG and Shuan Yoong, Wei Boon, Yaw Ming and me from Audit department. The format of this year’s competition is slightly different from previous year. There will be 1 ladies’ and men’s single, 2 men’s doubles and 1 mixed doubles. Each of the players have individual strengths in related games, tactically and technically-equipped. We have been training vigorously for the past month and hopefully our effort will pay off when the games start this coming Monday. Overall, the 2008 team is a well-balanced team, both men and ladies. We believe that with this team, we can achieve a better position as compared to last year and with luck, we hope that we can bring back all 3 points for Deloitte.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partner in JB office, Mr. Tan Theng Hooi, who has been very supportive by allowing a JB staff, Shuan Yoong, to train with badminton team in KL for the past one month. Not to forget Mr. Stanley Teo, who has been “supervising” us and continuously keeping a watchful eye on every single player making sure we give our 110% during the training sessions. Last but not least, I would like to thank the supporters in advance who will be coming to cheer for us. With your presence and strong support, you will be our third player in the court to help us to progress all the way to the top. Hope to see you there!

Reflections
  Aug

People of Deloitte,

It’s IAFG time!

A year has gone since we landed our first ever IAFG Overall Championship Trophy. During IAFG 2007, we have celebrated our glorious victories over our rivals in numerous occasions and in countless events. Event after event we emerged as champions. Thunderous cheers and applauds were given by our ever present, die-hard supporters to our champions, while tears had been shed and crying shoulders were lent to our fallen compatriots. Despite being labeled as ‘underdogs’ for the Championship and even after losing some of the events, we, the people of Deloitte, never surrendered and went all out to compete despite the defeats . The players of Deloitte, constantly had it in their minds to think that it is always far better to give in their 110% to win glorious triumphs, even though it may be checkered by failure, rather than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoyed much nor suffered much, as they lived in a grey twilight that knew not victory nor defeat.

Tears had been shed during the last year’s outing, not for mourning of defeats or disappointment, but for our celebration of countless victories. The wind of change had certainly swiped through IAFG 2007. During the IAFG 2008 meeting with the rest of firms in mid June, it was certainly proud to be part of IAFG winning team as we did not have to draw lots for most of the events as we were the defending champions. While other firms were drawing lots for the respective event, they were mumbling and praying hard that they would not meet us (something which we had gotten used to do in previous years!). This is something which we have not heard nor experienced in any of our previous IAFG meetings before. The name, “Deloitte”, is striking fear amongst our rivals in IAFG.

Ever since the end of IAFG 2007, Deloitte has started training for this year’s competition to build on our success in 2007. It has taken over a year of never ending training and practice and our players’ relentless effort to attend the training, in order to better equip ourselves to defend our IAFG 2007 Champions Title. The IAFG players have been training relentlessly since the last outing and the IAFG committees have been laying out the plans and strategies for us to defend this year’s title. They took up the tasks and the responsibilities of flying our flags high for this year’s games, voluntarily without getting extra pay. One can never take away their commitment, hard work, and sacrifice they have made for our Firm. We can never forget the cheers of our supporters and the encouragement they have given to the IAFG players during the last outing. They came in numbers, they came in full force and cheered for us. They shared our joyous moments and mourn of defeats with us. Bear in mind that they too, are part of us. They all shared the same culture and values like you and I do under Deloitte’s umbrella. Without them, we will never be where we are today. Without them, we will never be more inspired to win this year’s title again. For this, we shall always stand united and stand up for each other, for all People of Deloitte are your brothers/sisters in arms alongside you both on and off work.

We, the People of Deloitte, are built on and driven by the motto of “Standard of Excellence”. We will not and certainly do not accept anything less than being the best. We do not accept anything less than being the IAFG 2008 Champions! We are the winners of IAFG 2007 and we think constantly in terms of we can, we will, and we are. Losers, on the other hand, concentrate their waking thoughts on what they should have or would have done, or what they cannot do. We are not the losers and we certainly have not dwelled on defeats we suffered before. We have worked too hard for the current campaign and have certainly come too far to lose in current year’s campaign and to lose on all the success we have achieved last year.

For those who have been supportive of last year’s events, we sincerely appreciate your relentless effort and encouragement you have given to us. For those who have not been attending IAFG 2007 events, I strongly plea for you to do so this year, as we are about to embark on yet another greatest journey of winning this year’s title again. We need your support. The IAFG 2008 players need greater support and encouragement from you in order for us to win this year’s battle. If there was ever a time to dare, to make a difference, to embark on something worth doing, it is now! It may not be for any grand cause necessarily, but for something that tugs at your heart, something that's your inspiration, something that's your dream. With your relentless support inspiring our Golden Team of IAFG 2008, we can certainly materialize our dream of winning IAFG 2008 Champions Title.

We are in for the thunder strike again to clinch this year’s title. And who says lightning does not strike twice? It will be if we lent our support to our Golden Team of IAFG 2008.
So…Arise, arise now People of Deloitte, come forward to cheer for your comrades. Let them feel your presence, let the other firms feel our fury. Shields shall be splintered, grounds shall be shaken. Arise now Deloitte-eans, and ride to our glory!!!

It’s all for GOLD!

We are somewhat nervous and also very excited as we will be kicking off the event soon. This year we will be having a new line up of players. However, they are very passionate about the game and we will try our very best to defend last year’s title.

The time that we spent together training was invaluable, especially for a team that has played little or no futsal. It’s a game that, as you play you get better. So, on behalf of the Deloitte IAFG2008 Ladies Futsal Team, I call upon all Deloitte-ians to come by to support us. Wish us all the best!

2 Points

Last night, our tennis team managed to score two points in the IAFG 2008 title race by finishing first runners-up.  The scores for the games are as follows:-

1.       Ivan (1st Singles)  2 – 0
2.       Hun (2nd Singles) 0 – 2
3.       Anna (Ladies Singles)  0 – 2
4.       Ivan & Hun (Mens Doubles) 2 -0
5.       Choong & Yvonne (Mixed Doubles) 0 – 2

Our team performed exceptionally well and it was a keenly contested match which could have gone either way.  However, it was PwC’s night as they managed to win the IAFG 2008 Tennis champions with the final score of 3 – 2.

The players would like to thank all the supporters who turned up to watch the matches and the good sportsmanship showed throughout the matches by both the players and the supporters.

While we may not have won, it was how we played that mattered the most en route to building the foundation for a better team next year.

ROUND 1

Last night, Samba De Futsal was packed with players and supporters from the respective accounting firms. It was a nervous night for our Ladies Futsal team as not only most of them have never played futsal under such circumstances but also, the girls were up for a daunting task to defend the championship title won in IAFG 2007.

Tension was building up as our team stepped onto the field against BDO at 6.40pm. Cheers from our loyal supporters drowned the noise in the futsal complex. Motivated by the cheers and equipped with the skills from their previous trainings, our girls played their hearts out and managed to secure a win over BDO with a convincing scoreline 2 – 0 with Nurhazrati getting onto the scoresheets.

It was less than half an hour later that our girls were due to play against last year’s second runner-up, PwC. The PwC ladies futsal team was seen training vigorously months before the tournament started and their efforts paid off. Our girls managed to put up a good fight against their opponents but succumbed humbly to PwC with a scoreline of 3 – 0. By 8.00pm, all the 5 teams had played two games each with the top two teams (PwC and EY) leading marginally over KPMG, Deloitte and BDO.

Our girls will be going up against KPMG and EY tomorrow, 7 August 2008 at 6.00pm. This two remaining games will be the toughest games for our girls so far in their quest to defend the IAFG 2008 Ladies Futsal championship title. Let us all take time to cheer our girls on and also show our competitors that Deloitte supporters can win ‘Best Supporters’ title (if there ever was an event in IAFG).

DELOITTE IN FINALS

TODAY :  6PM

Come support our TEAM

--------------------------------

6 August 2008 (Wednesday)

Deloitte has defeated PwC in the semifinal to qualify for the badminton finals for the first time in more than 5 years. Deloitte will be meeting EY, the defending champions, in the finals. The last time Deloitte won the badminton IAFG was way back in year 2000. Some people have earlier written off Deloitte chances of even reaching the finals and of course in no way of taking the championship away from EY who has successfully defended it for a few years in succession. If Deloitte continues to perform like how they have performed against PwC, EY will definitely be in for a surprise in the finals against Deloitte.

The Deloitte team knew that winning their match against PwC would depend fully on the guys to perform and to bring in the points considering PwC has a very strong lady player (probably one of the best in Selangor). We believe PwC knew that too and all they needed is one of our guys to fumble. With the supporters behind cheering the Deloitte team on and the coaches constantly shouting instructions across to them, our guys just played their hearts out and took maximum points enough to win the tie against PWC.

The heroes for the night are our 2nd Men Doubles the combination of Eng Teck and Sim. They were playing against PwC’s top men doubles who have switched to play as 2nd doubles instead of 1st doubles in their lineup. It was a tactical move by PwC. Both Eng Teck and Sim started off nervously and gave the first set away with simple mistakes. The first set ended quickly with the score of 21 – 10 to PwC. During the break, both of our coaches managed to calm down our players and told them to just play how they normally play during the hours and weeks of painful intensive training. True enough, the pep talk worked and Eng Teck and Sim were just on fire in the second set smashing away their opponents with a score of 21 – 15. They continued their magnificent performance in the rubber set before the opponent could recover their composure and won 21 – 16. Well done guys! We are all proud of you.

DELOITTE FUTSAL (MEN) TEAM

Our futsal team has started training 3 months ago. As part of the preparation for the IAFG, the team has also recently participated in open futsal tournaments to gain some match experiences and strengthen teamwork. Judging from the hardwork that we have invested in the regular training sessions and the high morale of our team, the Deloitte futsal team is well prepared to defend their championship for futsal against the other competitors.

For this year’s competition, the number of participating teams has increased. We should never underestimate our opponents as we believe they too are preparing hard to try taking the trophy away from us and they may pull an upset. Being the defending champion, the pressure will definitely be on us. However, we can assure you that we will certainly give our very best for Deloitte to retain the trophy at our office for the 2nd year running.

It was great having our supporters there to cheer us on at the last IAFG competition as it certainly motivated us to play better. We hope that the supporters will continue to cheer for us this year on 9th August 2008 and 12th August 2008 for the group matches, and the semi-final and final (assuming we qualify) respectively. The supporters roaring presence will boost our morale and we hope the futsal team will once again triumph and bring glory to Deloitte!!

DELOITTE BOWS OUT…

Last night, our ladies futsal team bowed out of the tournament after losing to both KPMG and EY. Some may say it was the gloomy weather that affected the gameplay of our girls as the wind was not blowing in our favour. But for those who were not there to witness our girls in action, you would have missed out on one of the best games played in this year’s tournament. As our girls stepped onto the field, you could see the passion and commitment in every players’ eyes. Even after succumbing to KPMG in their first game (which would deny them a top-two placing), our girls maintained their composure to push EY to their limit eventhough ultimately losing the game 2 – 1.

A big thank you to our ladies futsal team for representing us in this year’s tournament. We are very proud of you…and we will definitely be back next year to vie for the championship title again!

CHESS

This year, we enter the tournament as defending champions and our team has every intention of repeating last year’s success. But it won’t be easy. The teams we beat last year won’t want to lose again and with the number of firms contesting the event increasing to 7, as compared to 6 last year, fatigue would also be a factor.

Nevertheless, we intend to WIN and continue being the IAFG CHESS CHAMPIONS.

Our Deloitte chess players for IAFG 2008 are as follows:-

Johnathan Sia Teong Yee
Gary Huang Khean Yeong
Low Fu Shern
Ong Yon Meng

A GOOD WEEKEND
  Aug
11

Over the weekend, we managed to gain 4 points in the overall IAFG 2008 by finishing FIRST RUNNERS UP in both BADMINTON AND CHESS!

WELL DONE TO BOTH TEAMS AS YOUR PLAYERS PERFORMED VERY WELL AND BROUGHT HOME THE POINTS!!!

And a special thank you to our JB office for their support in the IAFG 2008.  We would like to thank Lim Qie Jie (Chess) and Wang Shuan Yoong (Badminton) for coming to KL for trainings and the games as well.

Chess

It started off well with our chess team.  For the first match, our team defeated the surprise team of the tournament, Mohd Nizaruddin & Co, 4 -1 to start the ball rolling.  Thereafter, our team was up against PwC and unfortunately, we didn’t do too well there and were defeated by them.  After that, our team stood up to the challenge and continued by winning the five remaining matches to end up being the First Runners Up for the IAFG 2008 Chess championship by a comfortable margin.

Our players were exhausted as the games only ended at 6pm but were happy to contribute 2 points towards us being the overall champions.

End Results :-

1. PwC (Champions)
2. Deloitte
3. Mohd Nizaruddin & Co.

Badminton

Again, we have failed to overcome the mighty EY for third year in a row. Despite the convincing 3 nil achieved by EY against us, the Deloitte Badminton Team did not kneel down without giving a fight. EY, for the first time in the tournament, fielded their strongest line-up which saw them unleashing their best men’s single player (former national player) for first time in the tournament.

Our first single, Eng Teck, after much success against PwC and AAC men’s player, is put to the test to play against the best men’s single player in the tournament, Alvin Chew. Despite Eng Teck came up second against Alvin Chew, Eng Teck did give out his best and fought gallantly before losing in straight sets to Alvin. Second game featured our ladies single, Shuan Yoong, who went down humbly against the much stronger EY ladies single in straight sets.

By now, defeat was looming large as we are 2 nil down in the overall score. Deloitte must to win the third match. which featured our badminton captain, Wey Seng and Wei Boon in order to keep the championship alive. During this intriguing encounter, Wey Seng and Wei Boon made their final stand against EY and fought graciously before going down narrowly to its opponent in a 3 set tie.

Despite the disappointment of being defeated in the final hurdle of the game, our badminton team held their heads up high. This is because we have gained a valuable 2 points in the competition since 2004. The badminton captain, Wey Seng, after suffering the agonizing defeat for the third time against the same opponent, has vowed to come back stronger next year to stake our claim to the badminton trophy. Overall, the badminton event is still successful campaign as we have gained valuable points to en route Deloitte to retain our Overall Championship Title. Credits must be given to the players and coaches for their relentless commitment and effort. We are proud of you!!

Final Score:  EY (3) Def Deloitte (0)

Futsal (Men)

At the same time at Samba de Futsal, our mens futsal team kicked off the first match against KPMG. They were too cautious in the game but still came out winners 2-1.  After that, our team had already warmed up and white washed FHMH and BDO 5 -0 respectively.

The team booked a place in the Semi-Finals against AAC this Tuesday (12th August 2008) and look forward to seeing more supporters there to cheer our team on.

PwC (2) def. Deloitte (1)

PwC avenged their defeat in the football finals by defeating Deloitte with the exact score line in yesterday’s futsal match.

The match started of with PwC, which was declared our opponents yesterday afternoon, taking the first shot at goal immediately after the referee blew his whistle. After overcoming the early jitters, Deloitte settled down quickly and Kenny converted the first goal for Deloitte not long after that. With Deloitte taking the lead, the game immediately became very aggressive and some hard tackles were conveniently overlooked by the match officials. Just before the half time, our defense made a mistake and our goalkeeper has no choice but to come out from his goal line to narrow down the angle of the goal post. Unfortunately, he came out a little too far and handled the ball outside the ‘D’ and was given a red card.

With a man suspended for 2 minutes, Deloitte sacrificed a player to bring Shaharol in to take over as a goal keeper. Deloitte were playing with only 4 men. PwC took advantage of it and scored the equalizer. In the second half, Deloitte held ball possession most of the time and were passing the ball around looking for opportunities to score the 2nd goal. It became even more frustrating for the players when some hard tackles were not spotted by the match officials. Some spectators who were not familiar with the game were also questioning how both the referees (especially the thinner one) overlooked it when it was so obvious. It seemed at this point of the match, the bad memories of poor refereeing of the Football finals were haunting us again.

As time was running out, Deloitte players who were pushing forward most of the time made a mistake and left the backline opened. PwC again took advantage of it and scored the winning goal in the last second of the match. PwC advanced to the finals against EY who had earlier beaten AFTAAS 2 – 1 in the other semifinal.

As we always say, ‘It is not about winning or losing, it is about HOW you win or loss it’. Chill guys! Even with most of the players nursing injuries you guys still gave your best out there. To us, you are still our champions. Kudos to all the supporters who came out in numbers yesterday. We hope you will continue to support your Deloitte team in the remaining events.

In the final, EY beat PwC by a 1 -0 score line. The final standings of the futsal (men) competition are as follows:-

EY (Champions)
PwC – Runners -Up
Deloitte – 3rd Place
Aftaas - 3rd Place

TO THE FINALS AGAIN

TODAY AT 5.30PM

COME SUPPORT OUR TEAM

ITS ONLY A FIVE MINUTE DRIVE FROM OUR OFFICE

Our netball team has qualified for the Netball Finals this Friday by beating KPMG 26-8.

After giving a first class performance during the preliminary matches on Monday, our netball team was brimming with confidence as they strolled into the court for their semi-final encounter against KPMG. Even though the match was played under the scorching sun, our girls were up to the task no matter how physically demanding it was in yesterday’s match.

Our girls stamped their superiority from the first whistle with a couple of unanswered attacking moves against KPMG. As our girls’ confidence grew so did the scoreline. They were almost sinking basket after basket at their freewill. And every goal scored was cheered on by our supporters whose number grew by the minute.

Our girls seal their spot in the final by beating KPMG 26-8. We will be facing PwC in the final on August 15, 2008 (Friday) at 5.30 pm. A tough challenge it may be but we really hope that our girls will rise to the occasion and make us proud once again.

Go Team Deloitte!

WE NEED YOUR VOICES!

It has been a long time since The Fan had felt so out of sorts and lost for words. The defeat by our futsal lads yesterday evening was indeed a very bitter pill to swallow not only to The Fan but to every single Deloitte-ian that was there cheering and spurring our lads on. Alas! As faith would have it, it was not meant to be our day. Well, let us not cry over spilt milk and kudos to out futsal lads for giving their very best up until the final whistle. It is ok boys…it is not the end of our IAFG campaign…not by a long shot!

We started this year’s campaign from where we left off last year, bulldozing our way to the leader board like a freight train. But somehow this freight train seems to be slowly losing speed. This is apparent as we witnessed our lead at the top of the table being trimmed to a mere 2 point from PwC, our nearest threat for the overall title. With less than 2 weeks to go and 6 events left to be contested, the race for the overall title is and will be going down to the wire!

The Fan has been at every game involving Team Deloitte since IAFG 2008 started in early July and has bared witness to not only screams of joy as we notched win after win but tears of despair as well as we were defeated by our opponents. But one thing remains unchanged through out our campaign so far, the infamous Deloitte Roar by the equally infamous band of Deloitte supporters.

The one thing that makes The Fan proud and stand tall is the kind of people we have within our firm. And this has been portrayed with their ferocious cheers and screams each time Team Deloitte walks onto the playing field. Be it a win or a loss, our people have always been there to show their undying support for our team of athletes. The Fan truly believes this is the X-factor that has been driving Team Deloitte in their success story so far. Our athletes have been performing on the IAFG stage solely for us, THE SUPPORTERS!

So to all of you Deloitte-ians out there, The Fan urges you…no, The Fan pleads with all of you, please come out in numbers and let our remaining athletes know that for every single drop of sweat (and blood) they shed will not be in vain. Let them know we are behind them all the way until the trophy of the IAFG is being hoisted by Team Deloitte once again! Our destiny remains very much in our own hands. The Fan knows that everyone is very bogged down with their work commitment but if our athletes can sacrifice their personal time to train and juggle their work at the same time, there is no reason why we, the supporters, cannot spare a few moments of our time to show our support and spur them on. Our athletes have done their part, now let us fulfill ours and make sure Team Deloitte brings back the IAFG trophy for the second year in the row! If there is a moment that Team Deloitte ever needed their supporters the most, now is the time! Here and now, let us all rewrite history once again. Spare them these 2 weeks of your life and rest be assured it will be the most cherishable 2 weeks you will never ever forget!

To our athletes who have gone out there in the arena and gave your best, thank you very much! To the remaining athletes, the gauntlet has been thrown upon you to ensure that glory shall be ours. Go out there, give your best and make us proud! Win, lose or draw, The Fan is proud to walk by your side throughout this journey. Go Team Deloitte!!!

“ONCE A DELOITTE-IAN, ALWAYS A DELOITTE-IAN”

REPORT : NETBALL AND SNOOKER
  Aug

NETBALL : WIN #7

Before netball, the last IAFG2008 win for Deloitte (no. 6) was from Bowling on the 26 July 2008. Deloitte had to wait for almost 3 weeks for Win no.7 to come and during those 3 weeks, Deloitte achieved four (4) second placing via golf, badminton, chess and tennis. It seemed to us that Win No.6 was our unlucky number and would haunt us through out the championship. However, the wait was well worth it and our netball team proved everybody wrong by successfully defending their championship last Friday. They surely did it in style by beating PwC in the finals with a scoreline of 24 – 13.

Congratulations to our girls who have sacrificed so much in preparing themselves for the competition. Also, a big thank you to all the supporters who turned up in great numbers to cheer for our girls. Please continue to give your support for the remaining games. It is only one more week left of IAFG2008. Let’s go all out!

Netball Results
Champions – Deloitte
Runners up – PwC
3rd Placing – KPMG and EY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SNOOKER : 3RD PLACING

A day before the competition, our snooker players were full of confidence that they will perform up to expectation and deliver the vital points for Deloitte. However, on the competition day, everything went wrong when our top snooker player was not present and the team had to field in their substitute in the first 2 opening matches of the day against our toughest opponents, KPMG and EY. EY is the defending IAFG champions and KPMG is also one of the main contenders to take the snooker title this year. It is unfortunate that Deloitte had to play them without their top player and lost narrowly with the scoreline of 1 – 2 for both the matches. Our snooker players suddenly found themselves in a situation where they needed to win all their remaining 3 matches just to secure a third placing so early in the competition. It was certainly a mountain to climb especially with the remaining opponents being BDO and PwC - both had won the snooker title before and have good players. Our players needed to regain their composure and maintain their focus and concentration which was not an easy task especially from being in a position of one of the favourites to win the snooker title to now fighting for a mere third placing.

Fortunate or unfortunate, our top player finally managed to make it in time for our third match of the day against BDO. With the presence of our top player, the team somehow regained their confidence and managed to win all their remaining matches. The player of the day was certainly our very own Yee Meng a.k.a. Mr Cold Cucumber (who has a nerve of steel), upholding his reputation of being reliable by delivering the winning points in all 3 remaining matches when it matters most. With all 3 wins, Deloitte suddenly found themselves in a position of a potential second placing should EY beat KPMG in the last round robin match. However, the day was never meant to be for Deloitte when KPMG came back from behind and broke EY’s winning streak in the last match. Based on count back, both EY and KPMG were tied in standings and they had a playoff to decide the winner of which, EY prevailed to retain their IAFG snooker champion title.

It is difficult to explain the overall performance of our snooker team in the competition. It can be said it was a success of an unsuccessful mission. In anyway, congratulations to our snooker players who were there from the start holding on together throughout the competition especially in that desperate period and pulled off a great come back. The team has at least gained Deloitte one more point away from the closest rival in the overall standings.

Snooker Results
Deloitte 1 – KPMG 2
Deloitte 1 – EY 2
Deloitte 2 – BDO 1
Deloitte 2 – PwC 1
Deloitte 3 – SJGT 0

Overall Results
1st placing – EY
2nd placing - KPMG
3rd placing - Deloitte

IAFG2008 - SQUASH
  Aug
19

This year we have a combination of players gathered from different discipline of racquet games to come help form a team hoping to put up a gallant performance against our opponents who have a good track record in the squash event. We are certainly the underdogs here but rest assured that we will give our very best and who knows, we might just pull off a surprise here. The players in our squash team are: -

Kevin Lee
Chee Choon Yen
Kamal Muzafar
Ivan Choo
Pua Eng Teck
Chan Sue Wen

We hope to see our supporters at the National Squash Centre, Bukit Jalil tonight @ 7.00pm to cheer us on.

SQUASH
  Aug
20

Yesterday evening at National Squash Centre, Bukit Jalil, we had the first round of the round robin event for IAFG 2008 Squash Championship.  Our team, comprising of combination of players from all sorts of racquet games was ready for action.

For our first match, we were up against PwC and Kevin Lee (the captain) got the ball rolling to get a point for us with the score of 9 -0, 9-3.  Kevin was on top form and played the match as if he was 20 years younger and made the small band of supporters there amazed with his agility and fitness.  However, the amazement died down as we were defeated 1 – 4 by PwC.

For the second match, Kevin again got the ball rolling again by defeating a younger player (again) and showing his amazing and mind boggling speed and fitness.  Many supporters there were once again lost for words as Kevin was victorious. Ivan, our IAFG 2008 tennis player who just picked up squash, used all his tennis skills to deliver the second point shortly after that. Choon Yen wrapped up victory for us as we lost the other two games to finish with the final score of Deloitte (3) def KPMG (2)

Squash will bring the curtains down for the IAFG2008 on Monday, and we hope to see many more supporters to cheer our team on against EY for the final match.

Kudos to Kevin for leading the team by example and a special note of thanks to all our supporters who made the long journey to cheer our team on.

IAFG2008...COMING TO AN END!
  Aug
21

The last 2 months have been a roller coaster ride for Team Deloitte in the soon to be concluded IAFG 2008. During these past 2 months we have seen the good and some might say the bad side of Team Deloitte. But The Fan chooses to see it in a totally new spectrum. Yes, there is no doubt that winning is important but it is not everything and certainly does not epitome the spirit of IAFG, not by the founding members at the very least.

What Team Deloitte has achieved so far is certainly no overnight success. It is the result of sheer hard work and determination put in by every individual from the very top to the bottom. It is not a one-man show but rather a ONE FIRM show. It is the collective effort from each and every Deloitte-ian! No time and effort put in is ever too small or insignificant. From the athletes right up until the supporters, everyone has a role to play and so far, they have all done a fantastic job!

Team Deloitte has been in the lead right from day one till now. With 3 events remaining (squash, athletics and tug-of-war) and our lead being trimmed to a slender 5-point margin, this year’s race for the overall title will be going down the wire. Taking into account the fact that our athletes have to juggle their workload and attend regular training sessions, they have been superb to say the least. This coupled up with some unwanted external factors like sudden change of venues and unexpected postponement of games (for reasons known only to the party involved but definitely not us) at the very last moment have not deterred our team spirit. Probably these are some of the intended tactics to waver Team Deloitte in our quest to defend the overall title.

Well, try as they may (The Fan may even consider giving them a pat on the back for such “sportsmanship” shown) but Team Deloitte is no longer the whipping boys of yester years. The Fan can go on and on and on about the sort of “adversities” being thrown at Team Deloitte, be it intentional or unintentional, but one thing remains for sure, Team Deloitte has not only risen to the occasion but risen even stronger and more determined than ever with every adversity faced!

Team Deloitte has come too far to let this title slip away from our hands. With only 3 events remaining, the IAFG Committee has been having sleepless nights trying to calculate the odds and possibilities of Team Deloitte being crowned the overall champion but the external factors are just too many and beyond our control. But one thing is for sure though, our destiny remains very much in our own hands! All we have to do is at least ensure that Team Deloitte finishes ahead of PwC in these last 3 events and God willing, the IAFG trophy shall remain in our cabinet for another year.

With less than a week left, we are plagued with fatigue both physically and mentally but the stage has been set for Team Deloitte to put on a performance worthy of champions. So, let us come together as ONE in numbers never seen before and unleash the Deloitte Roar and cheer our remaining athletes on. Let us all stand together for one final push towards IAFG glory! Most importantly, let’s do it for those who have sacrificed so much of their time and for the sweat and blood they have shed.

3 events, 2 days…will you be part of Team Deloitte as we etch our name in the parthenon of IAFG? The choice is yours to make. This will be The Fan’s last article for IAFG 2008 but before I bow out, please heed my last words to you all, the people of Deloitte. Ask not what the firm can do for you but what you can do for the firm.

To all of our IAFG athletes, past and present, it has been an honour for The Fan to be given this opportunity to pen my thoughts throughout our campaign this year. Thank you very much for without such courageous sportsmen and sportswomen like you, there would not be The Fan to begin with!

“ONCE A DELOITTE-IAN, ALWAYS A DELOITTE-IAN”

IAFG2008 Volleyball – One More Point in the Bag

After losing their first two matches against EY and KPMG in Day 1, our players knew that they have a difficult task ahead since they now need to win ALL their remaining matches in Day 2 by straight sets in order to secure a third placing in the volleyball standings. What is even more difficult for them is to overcome their disappointment in knowing that they could have performed better in Day 1 and should not have lost their match against EY especially after taking a substantial lead in the 1st set. After Day 1, their spirits were at a low and they had to pick themselves up and wipe away that bad experience off their mind and concentrate on getting that one important point that Deloitte needed in the overall IAFG2008 Championship Standing.

Not only did they redeemed themselves from the disappointing result in Day 1, the Deloitte volleyball team has defeated both BDO and PwC by winning both the matches in style on Day 2.  They had won both the matches in straight sets to secure third placing. The players were jumping in joy and hugging each other behind the cheers of their supporters when they earned the final point against PwC as though they had won the volleyball event. The players knew how important that one point meant to the firm and were joyous that they have helped contribute in our road of creating history. Most importantly they did not want to disappoint the Deloitte athletes of the other 18 games who have equally worked so hard in achieving our overall objective. We are Deloitteans. We work together as ONE.

Volleyball Results:

Day 1:

Deloitte 1 – EY 2
Deloitte 0 – KPMG 2

Day 2:

Deloitte 2 – BDO 0
Deloitte 2 – PwC 0

Finals (22.8.08) – KPMG vs EY
3rd Placing - Deloitte

The events that will decide the IAFG 2008 Champions has finally arrived.  This year, we have been in the lead of the champions table since the conclusion of the first game.  However, the title of the 2008 IAFG Champions has yet to be decided.  PwC has pushed us to the limits in this race and they have a strong chance of taking the title away from us.  Our lead can disappear after the conclusion of tomorrow’s games.

Two games, and a maximum of 6 points will be up for grabs. The hopes of everyone in Deloitte to be the # 1 firm rest on the outcome of these two games. You may think to yourself, what is so important about the IAFG.  We are the standard of excellence and we want to stay as #1.

You may also wonder to yourself, how can you help if you’re not in the teams?  You can come and cheer our players on. Many games we have won due to the loud cheers the players have heard. The voices gave us the extra 10% to push as hard as possible while demoralising our opponents.

Come, tomorrow morning to the MSN Training Stadium in Bukit Jalil.  Breakfast / Refreshments will be provided in view that the games start at 9AM. Location map can be obtained in the Upcoming Events Tabs to your left of this website.

WE MUST BE CHAMPIONS!!  COME CHEER OUR TEAM

IAFG2008 - Athletics & Tug Of War (TOW)

Deloitte wins Athletics and take 3rd spot in TOW
23 August 2008 (Saturday)

Our athletes displayed an outstanding performance last Saturday by winning 8 out of the 13 events in athletics. The results gave Deloitte 32 points in the athletics standings ahead of the closest competitor, EY who came in second with a total of 18 points. This means that Deloitte has successfully defended their championship in athletics and has secured another 3 points for the overall IAFG2008 standings.

It was a day of high pressure for all the athletes being the defending champions and also the fact that PwC could overtake our lead should our athletes failed to defend their crown. However, the athletes stood up to the challenge and managed to perform admirably well to ensure the IAFG Athletes challenge trophy will stay in Deloitte for another year.

Our Tug-of-War team, who was also in action last Saturday, received a walkover from Asnaf in the quarterfinals giving the Deloitte team a free ticket to the semifinals against PwC. Our boys knew that they have a slim chance against the big size guys (who call themselves Bull Dogs) of PwC who are the defending champions for this event. The smallest size guy in the PwC team is of the size of Deloitte’s biggest guy. Notwithstanding that, our TOW team gave the Bull Dogs a run for their money in the first pull. That pull lasted almost 2 minutes where both teams were just holding on the rope not willing to concede. Unfortunately, fatigue has taken its toll on our guys and the Bull Dogs were simply too strong. Well done lads, it was the fighting spirit that you have shown makes us proud of the TOW team. We know, you guys gave your best.

With the win in athletics and the 3rd placing for TOW, Deloitte has secured in total another 4 points in the overall IAFG standings. Below are the results of the TOW event: -

The Final Point

Yesterday evening at the National Squash Centre, Bukit Jalil, we had the final game of IAFG2008 where our squash team, which didn’t manage to garner any points in last year's IAFG, were up against the defending champions and current IAFG Squash champions, EY. Our team, comprising of a combination of players from all sorts of racquet games were ready for action with the pressure being off them as we were already crowned the IAFG2008 champions.

We were defeated in the game 3 -2 with our points coming from Choon Yen and Kevin Lee.  Kevin Lee, won all his games in the round robin tournament and was indeed a captain who led the team very well to deliver the one point. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE TEAM FOR CONTRIBUTING THE FINAL POINT IN OUR OVERALL IAFG TALLY!

Overall IAFG 2008 Champions – Deloitte

Deloitte has created history by winning the overall IAFG championship for the second time in succession. Last year was the first time Deloitte emerged overall champions, and this year, we managed to defend our title. Out of the 19 events contested, Deloitte had won 8 events and obtained four 2nd placing. Although we did not match last year’s record of 10 wins, we still managed to accumulate 37 championship points this year, 1 point more than last year.  We also obtained points in almost every game we competed in.  And have won some games 3 times in a row, which would mean that the challenge trophies will be with Deloitte forever.

This success is a result of a combination of a numerous factors. Without the Firm’s support, this of course will never be possible. We wish to thank our Managing Partner, AMG who has always been very supportive to the Deloitte IAFG Sports People and the entire IAFG events as a whole. He has been actively attending most of the matches in all the 19 events for the past 2 months constantly giving encouragement to the Deloitte team. Equally, our Senior Partners, Directors and Managers have all been very supportive by allowing their staff to attend training on a regular basis despite the peak period. They too have regularly attended the games and cheered for the Deloitte teams whenever they are in action. We thank them all.

We reserve a special thank you to our branch offices in Penang and Johor Bahru (JB) for allowing their staff to travel to Kuala Lumpur on a regular basis just to attend training and to participate in the IAFG. JB office has been exemplary, contributing players for events like badminton, netball, chess, basketball and volleyball of which these events have won us in total 11 championship points. A big thank you to Mr Tan Boon Hoe and Mr Tan Theng Hooi and especially to all the participants from JB and Penang for all the sacrifices made.

We all know that without the Supporters, the IAFG is pretty much meaningless. We all want to win the IAFG but most importantly the Supporters have to be there to share it with us. As previous year’s IAFGs, Deloitte Supporters have never failed the players and they are always there to cheer on the players. Kudos to the Supporters and we doubt we could have done it without them. A big thank you to the Supporters Committee.

We also wish to thank the Website Committee for an outstanding job. They have constantly brought exciting up to date IAFG news, information and pictures via the website, flyers and posters to the Deloitte people especially for those who could not be there to watch the games.

Lastly, a big thank you to all the Deloitte IAFG2008 Players for all the hard work and sacrifices made in the past 4 to 5 months in preparing for the IAFG. It is amazing, the spirit that they have shown to want to become Champions. Most of the teams train regularly 2 to 3 times a week for the past 4 months for this. They have had to juggle between work and training and most have to do overtime just to catch up with work. To all the players and to everyone involved, and also to the Firm, we give you 3 cheers for what you have done. Hip! Hip! Hooray! Hip! Hip! Hooray! Hip! Hip! Hooray!

Its now time to celebrate our victory and let’s enjoy the moment of success. See you all in IAFG2009!!!

IAFG2008 Dinner Ceremony
  Aug
31

28 August 2008 (Thursday)

The IAFG2008 dinner officially marks the end of the games which started on 30 June 2008 with the football event and ended on 25 August 2008 with the squash event. 19 events were competed over 56 days. Some even say that this is longer than the Beijing Olympics. This year’s IAFG, a record of 20 firms took part. Bowling and Futsal (Men) events had the most entries with 17 firms taking part. In Deloitte, 136 people took part in the games supported by 8 people in the Committee. Although, the games lasted 56 days but our Sports People started their preparations 3 to 4 months before 30 June 2008. This is the type of commitment and sacrifices that our Sports People and the Committee Members have put in so that Deloitte can retain the Championship. Thank you to everyone that made this possible. Congratulations Deloitte!

To further celebrate our success above, we will be organizing a private victory party for all Deloitte people this Friday (5 September 2008). Please look out for further announcement on this.
